Hey Brother Tommy
It has been a long, long, time. Your doing great work and I am excited and happy for you. Your a great drummer and singer bro.
I spent 15 yrs in Nashville, TN. Just moved out here to LA about a year ago.. My son and daughter in law and yes grandkids moved out here. He married into the Cash / Carter Family (yes that Johnny and June) he married the granddaughter of june carter and daughter to Carlene Carter. They had some babies so thats one reason I moved out to LA. I am still playing drums and stuff like that. If you come out this way on tour give me a shout I would love to hear you play again and to visit with you.
Hope to talk at you soon. Say hello to Austin Tx for me.

Big fan of your drumming - seen just about every EJ concert over the years in Dallas. Just saw the show last night at the House of Blues, and had to put that as one of the top shows - especially your drumming. You were blistering! The band's chemistry shows...you guys look like your having fun. The new songs sounded great....look forward to the next new CD.

Hi Tommy, I was looking back at some of the older posts on your fourm and noticed you and Andy do a gig with Mandy Mercer. Wow, I used to play with Dana Cooper back in the 80's and Mandy used to come out and sit in with us when we played in Austin. She is amazing. What a great memory! Anyway, you are the groove master and I look forward to your next project.
Come back to Georgia soon, Tim

Hi Tommy, Thanks for taking the time to "talk drums" with me! You are a fantastic drummer with a great sense of groove who seems to be able to play the right thing at the right time. I been listening to you for while and watching you with EJ since the mid 80's in Houston. I hope to see you soon on the next tour through Georgia.

Hi Tommy,
If you share a birthday with Alex Van Halen, you also share it with me, as well as Keith Jarrett, Ricky Nelson, and a few other musicians of note (OK so I'm not a musician of note - I play a lot of notes, though...).

Remember to come to Charlotte - maybe on May 8th? All the best,

Tommy.
Today while driving in my proudly owned Dodge Caravan and listening to the Christopher Cross "Another Page" album, I mean CD, I asked my son Nicky who is ten, who the drummer was as I always do and my wife is shocked at how he can remember.. He said it sounded like Steve Gadd.
Then the fourth track and fifth track came on.
I asked him again and he guessed Steve again. I told him it was a drummer named Tommy Taylor who also recorded one of my all time favorite Albums "Christopher Cross". His reply. "Wow.......He is really, really good. I guess he is in your top 10 drummers of all time huh?"
Absolutely!
Who says kids don't have good taste.
Please let me know if you are to be performing in the Philadelphia anytime.
Thanks Tommy.

Well...yes we do share the same b-day but he is older...I've never met him. I have seen the Hotel Van Halen in Amsterdam while walking once. Must be his dad's place ;-) Alex kicks ass! I wasn't a huge Van Halen fan because I was into other stuff when they came out...I can appreciate them more now for sure... he is a VERY original player and I dig what he does.

Hi Tommy,
Caught your show a week ago with EJ and Roscoe in St Pete; also saw you in Myrtle Beach last year. Just wanted to drop you a line to tell you I enjoyed both shows tremendously. Your energy and rhythm are a great complement to Eric's and Roscoe's melodicism. Hope to see you in Charlotte one of these days (where I live). Wish you guys did meet and greets after the shows - I'd love to get your autograph and shake your hand. Eric signed my CD's by mail, but I'd love to chat with you face to face. BTW - the Neighorhood Theatre in Charlotte is a lot nicer than the State Theatre. That's not a plug - it'd be a great place for you guys to play.
All the best,

I just found this website after finding a cd of Eric's at a garage sale. ha ha Old age isn't wonderful. I'm in dallas now, Zack is in Nashville, Tn working for Clint Black. Hello Tommy, I met you years ago at arlen studios in austin ,we were both there recording tracks for Barry Richman "I was barrys bassist at the time" Jeff Sipe and I had flown in from atlanta for the session. We recorded voodoo chile with barry on vocals, you played the tune and at the end you did a cymbal wash as you and jeff switched to a third stone from the sun groove played like a latin fusion beat.I had to write to you to tell you how much fun you are to hang with,I love that thing you do with your vocal chords while singing soul classics.I just got the austin city limits dvd from 1988, what a treat to hear the complete set, tommy you kill, I love your playing style you are at the top of my list. You and kyle are the #@*%! ,eric sounded his best in my opinion with you and kyle. Thanks for your time .Winn Sizemore

Tommy, I haven't seen you since Christopher Cross took off like a jet airplane. I remember meeting you when the band played a fraternity gig at a downtown skyscraper in Dallas just before the big album came out. You had the flamingo on a backdrop, but the album hadn't been released quite yet. We went to dinner with Chet, Chris, Andy, Rob, and I remember talking to you a little. Back in the 60's and early '70s I was older than you, playing drums in San Antonio, and then left to play in Chicago and on the road a few years before law school, so we didn't know each other in the early years. I soon quit to focus only on the law while you began a real career playing.

I recently got some emails from Andy Salmon about a reunion type thing in November in San Antonio, and while looking up some old names, ran across your website. I really enjoyed the pictures, but mainly wanted to sign in to say that I always really enjoyed your beautiful feel, time, and touch when I heard you play. I didn't know you were playing with Eric Johnson and other great musicians, so I am going to go buy some of the CD's listed on your site and hear you again. I am glad you stuck with it, and hope you have great continued success and enjoyment in playing music.

I have started playing a little after 30 years to play in a mostly lawyer blues band for Dallas Bar Association and charity functions here in Dallas - but the only one of us who really plays is Mark Pollock, and he just smiles and puts up with us. Mark has played with many great blues artists, and is a great guy to be around, living in Alpine, Texas now. Mark handled the classic guitar show part of the Eric Clapton event in Dallas, and actually got me #@*%! to the Crossroads show, but I was only able to be there a few hours, and did not know you were there. I will look forward to seeing you sometime. I really wish you the best of luck, and I appreciated and enjoyed your web site. You sounded so great when I heard you, and I'm looking forward to buying some of your newer things with Eric Johnson, and hope to see you some time. If you're going to play in Dallas, I'll come see you.

Well...I don't know what to say really...for those of you who don't know, Troy is one of my biggest fans and someone who turned out to be a really good friend. He would say my biggest fan, but others might as well so to keep everyone happy I say one of. I have met MANY fans over the last few years but Troy was the first person who made me realize that anyone even cared that i played drums. I ran into him on Ebay of all places at a very low point in my career. If it were not for Troy, it is doubtful that I would be playing with Eric Johnson again today and doubtful that I would have this website, and doubtful that I would be continuing to try and seriously play publicly in the capacity that I now do. The knowledge that the work that I have done had the impact and importance to him and possibly many others that I was unaware of, and also his desire to see me perform live and to see Eric and I perform live together has been instrumental in bringing me to the place where I am with drumming and music currently. For that I am indebted to him and all gratitude should be in his favor. Thanks bud.

My dearest thanks for another magical night you made possible for us, my friends and family and I. You went out of your way to do everything in your power to make the show enjoyable for all of us. I am overwhelmed at times by your kindness, thoughtfullness, and your pure genuine heart. Everyone had an amazing night. Billy and his brother were just in awe of the show. To quote Billy exact..."That is the tightest drummer I have ever heard live...this guy is amazing!" Tommy, you made me feel like a million bucks that night. I got to bring my now "wife" a close friend Bart, my father, and a close friend in the drum business to a show, where you made us all feel like guests of honor. You know I never want those nights to end, they could just go on forever! I am so happy for you and your success. I hope you have peace and content in your everyday life with the fact that you do what you love, and you make others happy doing it. You have made such a difference in my life, not just drumming... life itself. Seeing you take time with fans, helping Jade and extending your friendship, I hope to one day be half the man you are. We all need a mentor, and I am honored to have one in you.
Your friend and family

Hello! Sorry there has been some difficulty with the guestbook sign page. If you see this happening in the future PLEASE EMAIL us so we will know...otherwise we just figure no one likes us anymore. Thanks to all who came to see Eric, Chris and myself play with Joe Satriani over the last few weeks. What a super tour! SUPER COLOSSAL! We managed to play some great shows and have a lot of fun even though Chris and I were the only people in both bands and crew to not get the horrible summer grunge I think...Thanks to Richard Mullen, Mark Newman and Jeff Dunn the road managers and especially to Jeff for filling in on front of house sound while Richard was ill. Of course...he is the son of the legend Donald "Duck" Dunn who needs no introduction. Sorry but I have to keep telling people that...hahahah! Thanks to our old friend Ed Hughes and his lady for taking care of Ricky in Phoenix when he was ill. Thanks to webmaster John Bland who also takes care of our merch on the road, Dustin "Tinsley" drum manicurist and stage tech, JVZ on guitar world, Em Lehman our bus driver, Joe Priesnitz Artist management. A very special thanks to Joe Satriani and his band Jeff Campitelli and Dave LaRue as well as his posse, Mick, Big Mike on guitars, Rick...you're on aren't you...?,Monitor Bob, Galen, Barry, Randy, Jose, Ernesto, Dieter, and of course the mysterious Mr. Iverson. These are the most together and nicest bunch of folks anyone ever had the pleasure of touring with! See you on the funway! Thanks and GOODNIGHT!

Your May 6 Wiltern performance with EJ before Satriani was spectacular. The band was ridiculously tight. I wish I could bottle that stuff. I brought a friend who is in his mid-30s and had only been to 3 shows his whole life. He said I introduced him to a higher level of musical expression that he did not know existed. Your drum fills had him shaking his head. Great show all around -- see you guys next time in LA.

Oh, tell EJ thanks for the pick! It's glass-case caliber for this longtime guitarist and fan.

Hello...well...orange blossoms....gin blossoms....I dunno...the road...isn't too funny....things are quite enjoyable out here though. Joe Satriani and all of the band as well as the crew are really great folks and its a very nice opportunity to be touring with such fine people. We all had a nice dinner together this evening in Tampa on our day off. Ya'll check us out. There is a nice photo of Bill Ludwig III, myself and Jeff Campitelli, Satch's drummer on JoeSatriani.com. Ross William Perry was in Chicago visiting and did the honors with Jeff's camera....in the mean time....I'd like to buy a vowel....

Hi Tommy
Well just droping in to say that the show in Omaha Nebraska with Joe Satriani was a excellant show and Eric's band and ya'll were excellant. I had the pleasure of meeting Eric in Lincoln Nebraska on July 3rd 2005 my daughter Amanda hooked me up to meet him. She work's at The Marriott Fairfeild Inn in Lincoln and called ma around 11:30p.m. that night and told me that a Eric somebody from Austin was there and she told him I wanted to meet him well to make along story short it was so cool to meet him and I wrote a letter on the his site about it.Anyway's I was front row with the black Austin Texas hat on and enjoyed ya'll so much and meeting Eric was so cool I will never forget the experiance I had a backstage pass for Joe although I was unable to meet the rest of you so I thought I would drop you a email and say Hi.I gave a c.d. of mine to a roadie of ya'lls and if Eric recieved it it was for listening purpose's to show him what his music mean's to me and how indirectly he teach'es fan's like me to play and learn everyday so keep the inspiration's going!!

Hi Everyone....well another year come and gone. Thanks to everyone who voted for me in the Austin Chronicle Music Poll giving me the number two slot! Congrats to my good friend Whipper on his Number One Placement! Another SXSW winding down. Loads of Ej rehearsals...I did a really cool gig Friday with Mandy Mercier. I have to comment on Andy Salmon....man no matter how great they play no bass player puts it where Andy does! He is married to my foot. It is always such a pleasure to gig with him...this summer will mark our 29th year of playing together...how can that be? We do this gig with Mandy every year it seems and she always provides a festive adventure!!! This year's line up included Dan Earhart on keys and one of the most exciting Austin guitar players...Paul Skelton! Paul gave us the quote of the year...."I bet Howlin' Wolf didn't rehearse..." So.... Webster John promises new and fun stuff on tommytaylor.com soon, so stay tuned. Looking forward to seeing ya'll out on the ROAD next month. Ej's got some new tunes for ya and some different oldies so get your tix NOW!

Well....hmmm...preparation...well...we rehearse quite a bit. I dunno...I've never been much for too much thought about what I'm doing...but I mean er ah well...I mean I guess I'm always like working at it but like there are no major "things" that I do anymore...you know...like 40 days and nights of rudiments...or running the track and yoga and all that...you know I try to get all the rest of my life in order hahaha so I can be on tour. I think maybe I'll go for a motorcycle ride this time just before if the weather is nice...What do I bring..hmm.......I try to bring a French Press or an Espresso machine...some Diedrich Weiner Melange coffee beans....quite a bit of Dublin Dr. Pepper (corn syrup is bad...stay away from it...sugar is better)...plenty of pure grade b maple syrup....a wristwatch magazine or two....my computer so I can keep up with all of you that aren't on tour and of course ebay..I'm E-dicted....Help I've bid and I can't get up! uh...some music.... not much...usually 13th Floor Elevators....Gin Blossoms....The Jimi Hendrix Experience....music that I have recorded recently with others....some of my own compositions that I am thinking through....some stage clothes...and shoes...and some street clothes...uh....maybe some movies...like Hollywood Knights..or The Party...or Stand By Me...some mystical poetry...Stanley Burroughs Healing for the Age of Enlightenment....lots of Amy's frozen dinners in case we get some place where all they serve for dinner is critters....maybe some raw cacao and some goji berries for fun...maybe some olive oil....raw sunflower seeds...I dunno...a couple of crystals...my cel phone....and a large camel to ride around on when I get bored with all of that...the camel is a must...without my camel...I am useless. Its really hard to get the folks at each venue to custom build the pyramids from scratch....he gets REALLY ornery without his pyramids.....

Thanks for your comments....I remember thinking the City Limits was a below average night...in retrospect it holds up nicely. Mitch Mitchell....I could write a book about my feelings regarding Mitch Mitchell! If anyone knows how to reach him please email me. Why yes! I would definitely say so! To me no one has more uniquely altered the venue of pop rock music as a drummer, than Mitch Mitchell. There would have been no Jimi Hendrix Experience without Mitch. Prior to those recordings no one had put that linear style of jazzesque playing into R&B based rock and roll...simply an Icon...To me the single greatest drum fill in Rock HISTORY is the fill he plays just before Jimi's solo in Hey Joe. No one has ever set up a solo better. It just simply hasn't happened...and likely never will....its like Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Jimi. I scream and shreik out loud with joy every time I hear it and then scan back and play it over and over again and marvel at the moment....ABSOLUTE GENIUS!!!!!!
I have so many influences...I hardly have the space. Mitch definitely and Ginger Baker were the two biggest in my formative years. The first drummer I ever played along to was the incredible Al Jackson Jr., as he performed "Tramp" with Otis Redding and Carla Thomas on my best friend's hifi set. Smitty from Paul Revere and the Raiders, Hal Blaine and Gary Chester, Benny Benjamin, Clive Bunker, Mickey Waller, Ringo, Charlie Watts. Someday I will write my book....Spencer Dryden, David Fore, John Ike Walton....the list...goes on...

So in response to Nick's question about the Another Page record by Christopher Cross. It is a very long explanation but briefly, I played on 2 cuts on the record. Deal 'Em Again which was a song that I actually brought to Chris's attention when he was producing demos for the principle writer of the song's group, Texas. Chris re-wrote part of the song and we ended up also recording it on the Another Page record. The other track that I played on from the Another Page Lp is the ballad "Think of Laura" which was made famous by the soap opera General Hospital. I think, though it is simple, it is one of my best tracks. Thanks for asking and thanks for all the postive feedback. That was a bittersweet experience to say the least but I am very proud to have been a part of those recordings.

Tommy. As a High School Junior when the "Christopher Cross" album was released, it was a must have for me. Your drumming was and still is a classic. Very, very tasty. Anyway, on his second album what songs did you play on? I know Steve Gadd (No Time for Talk)? and Jeff Porcaro (Alright)? did at least one track each. Over twenty years later, I may now know. Also what drums heads and cymbals did you use for the albums. Thanks Tommy. Nick Pulos

I just got off the phone with Christopher Maresh ... he wanted to pay an auto insurance bill. I misspelled his name, told him my hearing was going bad 'cause of too much rock n roll in my youth. That got Chris rolling. I asked about you -- and surprise, surprise -- he said he currently played with you. It's been acres of time ... but I told him that if you furrowed your brow on my name, that he might add Salem Cigarettes to my middle name, and you just might remember. I've followed your career through the years and am proud to say to others that I "knew" someone that is truly doing in life what they've had a passion for all their lives. That is rare (and choice). You were the only kid I knew who had Jimi Hendrix posters on his wall at age 8!!! Congratulations! Job well done, my friend, and good luck to you in your future endeavors.

Ah friends and fans...what can I say. :-) David's album is a cool adventure. Of course David is one of my favorite guitarists and always has been since he was fresh in from Lubbock! He writes a good tune and sings killer too. We were assisted by very cool people including Lance Keltner, Will Sexton, Mark Andes, Kacy Crowley, and the legendary Spooner Oldham on this record. Its certainly worth a spin and should have gotten him more recognition than it did. Visit David at DavidHoltMusic.com. He'd love to hear from ya! There is a planned renaissance of the Austin Music Scene at Antone's I hear...Some Tuesdays will be hosted by Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon...you might even see me there...with David...check it out...

Jeff.. Saying you can play anything Tommy can play is a little ludicrous, wouldn't you think? That would be like me comparing myself to Mario Andretti. Sure, I can drive a car and press the pedal all the way to the floor, but there's a reason why he can do it for a living and I can't. Same goes for playing music.. It goes way beyond the mechanical aspects. It takes tremendous heart and a deep understanding and awareness of what makes music what it is to do what Tommy does. Things far beyond the mortal plane. So believe me when I say that there are very few souls on this earth who can "Play anything he's playing" or even understand the concept behind it. Cheers, Ryan.

Tommy, I owe a lot to you, Chris and Eric for getting me back behind the drums and playing again. I played constantly as a child as a twenty-something. Even made it to Martha Quinn's MTV battle of the bands basement tapes... Me and my childhood friends tried everything to "break through"... almost I guess. My wife and I had three kids in my thirties and I dropped the drumsticks. So I happen to hear Eric's material somewhere and "something" about it made me set up the kit. I built a studio in my basement listening to Chris's solo material and Venus. I now play a little piano, bass, guitar but mostly drums. having more money - I bought a dw black oyster glass 5 piece ( ode to Ringo ). I'm a family friend of the Zildjians ( my Dad and I built a few of Armand's houses years ago. ) I don't think I hit a different Cymbal in my lifetime.. now that's loyalty huh.. he was a wonderful man. I'm 40 yrs old and going strong... I'd LOVE to play an Eric show in my lifetime but that's your gig... damn. ha ha Your playing is strong and consistent and a nice compliment to the music. I guess that the amount of time I've listened to Eric's material is a testiment to how interesting and enjoyable I find your playing. My fav influences are Dave Weckl and Steve Gadd... - probably no suprise I will likely not miss your shows when you are in old Boston town... wish you guys head up here more often. Thanks again for being part of my musical rebirth... My kids love it too - Stay Well - Jay

Hey Tommy, I went through school with you from 6th grade on. I always remember our 6th grade teacher going around the room asking each of us what we wanted to be when we grew up and you said "rock star". You did it man. Thats so cool. I never made it past small bar gigs but it was fun. Now my 13 year old son started guitar a year ago. After 3 months he was already for a better teacher than me and I've been playing 30 years. After only a year my son can do Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page so well you would think they were in the room with you. We live outside of San Antonio but I need to find work up in Austin because that is where my son needs to be. He's played with some high school kids in bands but none of them come close to what he can do. He's really a fucking prodogy. We'll go into a music store and he will pick out a guitar, plug in and amaze people. They are really blown away when they ask something like "How long has he been playing? Since he was 4?". Then they find out he has only been playing for a year and the next thing I hear from them is something like "No shit!". Well Tommy it's great what you have done. Take care man. Henry

Hello Tommy, I'll never got here without my poor friend who is out of the internet(!?). After I read your bio, I recalled one thing that I had forgatten completely. It is that I saw the joint concert of C.Cross and Glenn Frey in Japan in '86. Were you a member of the band that time? I'm sorry, I don't remember... because it was long time ago... Anyway, I'm looking forward to see you (again?) in Osaka, Japan !!! //GMT18:30/08Oct2005
